Referenda in 5 Townships Threaten Pension Funding!
On the ballot in 5 townships (3 in Cook County, 1 in Will County, 1 in DuPage) the following referendum asks voters [Emphasis added]:
“Should the state of Illinois enact constitutional pension reform to protect workers’ existing retirements and generate savings which could provide property tax relief or be reinvested in the community?”
The townships are as follows:
Cook County:
Lemont
Palos
Palatine
Will:
Homer
DuPage:
Winfield
Aside from the confusing and misleading language, it’s not clear what this would even accomplish if passed. PLEASE MAKE CHAPTER SUAA MEMBERS AWARE IN THESE LOCATIONS. SUAA learned of these referenda because of engagement from your fellow members. The Chicago Tribune urged voters to support this referendum on March 21, 2025.
Please share this with voters in your neighborhoods, workplaces, and other social networks to encourage a NO VOTE on April 1!
"The (pension) funding problem ... is a crisis for which the General Assembly itself is responsible. . . Crisis is not an excuse to abandon the rule of law. It is a summons to defend it."
